Dangerous Heat in the Central and Eastern U.S.; Critical Fire Weather in the Great Basin and Southwest

Dangerous, record-breaking heat will intensify across most of the central and eastern U.S this week. Heat indices will likely exceed 100 degrees. Heat is likely to continue across the eastern U.S. through the Independence Day holiday weekend. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will be possible in the Eastern Sierra and White Mountains of Inyo County this afternoon. Otherwise, skies across the region will be mostly clear with cooler than normal temperatures.
Today will be the coolest day of the forecast period with high temperatures around 10 degrees below normal. Temperatures will gradually climb throughout the week, with slightly above normal temperatures returning next weekend.
