National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

Critical fire weather is anticipated this afternoon into the evening across the higher terrain of southern Gila County and the Tonto National Forest foothills east of Phoenix. This is due to the combination of low relative humidity, very gusty winds, and dry fuels. Any new fire starts could rapidly grow out of control. As a result, a Red Flag Warning is in effect.
A Wind Advisory remains in effect for the SW corner of Imperial County through 1 AM PDT Monday, with gusts commonly between 40-60 mph through the period. For the rest of Western Imperial County and the Imperial Valley, winds will pick up again late this afternoon into the evening, and so another Wind Advisory will be in effect from 4 PM to 11 PM PDT. A cold front will then sweep down the Colorado River Valley from the northwest tonight. Strong crosswinds will be possible along I-10, especially west of Desert Center, and so another Wind Advisory will go in effect from 11 PM this evening through 7 AM PDT Monday morning for much of Eastern Riverside County.
A dry weather system will progress through the region this weekend and into early next week resulting in temperatures cooling near normal today and below normal Monday and Tuesday.
This time of the year is the heart of fire season across Arizona. Several wildfires have received media attention and hit close to home across South-Central AZ, such as the Hazen fire near Buckeye and Jones fire near Wickenburg. With another dry, windy weather system likely to affect the region this coming weekend (Saturday & Sunday, 16-17 May), now is a great time to familiarize yourself with these wildfire prevention tips. Keep these in mind, especially with any recreational activities you have planned for the weekend.
