Heat and Fire Weather Concerns for the Center of the Nation; Coastal Impacts Across the East

Excessive heat returns for portions of the Plains today where heat indices will likely climb above the century mark. Furthermore, warm temperatures, strong winds and dry fuels may result in rapid spread of wild fires across the western High Plains today. Isolated to scattered storms in the northern Panhandle today. A storm or two may be strong enough to produce a severe wind gust of up to 65 mph, with hail up to the size of pennies.

Storms will start up in the southwest mid to late afternoon, and as they track northeast they will have the potential to become strong to severe as they approach the Oklahoma Panhandle. The main timing for this will be 5 to 9 pm, but may start as early as 4pm.

Strong to severe storms will be possible again on Saturday, and will be more focused in eastern New Mexico and the southwest Panhandle area. Hail and wind will be the primary threats. Moderate to heavy rain will be of concern at times as well.

While the northern Panhandles are highly favored to pick up over an inch, the southeast will have it's opportunity towards the end of the weekend into Monday morning.
