2023 New Mexico Hydrology and Drought Review

An active winter weather pattern at the beginning of 2023 continued through the spring months with several more bouts rain, snow, and heavy thunderstorms. Healthy snowpack through March survived well into April and May due to cooler and wetter conditions. Robust snowmelt runoff provided a significant boost to river and reservoir levels with flooding reported at several locations. A lackluster summer monsoon season with exceptionally hot temperatures unfortunately turned the tide toward worsening drought conditions once again. The weather pattern remained mostly dry and warm through the fall months with only a few days of beneficial rainfall. Drought conditions continued to deteriorate statewide through October and early November. A slightly more active weather pattern by late November and December finally brought some snow to the high terrain with much needed rainfall elsewhere across eastern NM. Please enjoy our 2023 "Hydrology & Drought Status Review" for details on flooding, drought, snowpack, spring runoff, and reservoir levels.
