2024 was a less active fire weather season compared to 2023. However, there were still some notable fires across the region. High winds and very low humidity did occur on several days however we avoided prolonged stretches of fire weather for the most part. There were a total of four large wildfires across northern and central NM of which the largest burned roughly 18,000 acres (South Fork Fire). Most of these smaller fires were managed for forest health and impacts were primarily limited to air quality. However, the wildfires around Ruidoso brought devastation to the local community with major property loss and life-threatening flash flooding.
