Overview

Severe thunderstorms developed in Sheridan County, Nebraska during the late evening hours on June 28th, producing hail up to the size of baseballs. As the storm moved northeast into southern South Dakota during the overnight hours, the storm continued to drop hail up to 2.5" in diameter, before producing wind gusts up to 83 mph over Bennett and Todd Counties.

As the storm moved through south central South Dakota, it started to show a radar signature for significant severe winds, with the first report of over 100 mph winds occurring at 5:48 AM CDT, 7 miles to the north-northwest of Joe Creek Recreation Area. The storm continued to show strengthening winds on the NWS Aberdeen radar (over 100 mph) as it moved northeast towards Highmore, SD around 6 AM CDT. Two observation sites reported a peak wind gust of 131 mph from the storm: 4 miles ESE of Holabird (6:15 AM CDT - Ambient Weather Station) and 1 mile WNW of Highmore (6:25 AM CDT - SD Mesonet)!  This led to significant tree and building damage in Highmore, SD.

The storm continued to produce wind gusts of 60-87 mph as it moved northeast across northern Hand and northern Spink counties. The storm then started to exhibit rotation as it moved through southeastern Brown and western Day counties, prompting Tornado Warnings and the storm produced a brief tornado 5.5 miles to the south-southwest of Andover, SD. The storm continued to produce wind damage across northeastern SD, before moving into southeastern ND and northwestern MN around 10 AM CDT. In the end, the storm travelled over 350 miles from southwest to northeast across South Dakota.

Based on the current information, the Storm Prediction Center is classifying this storm as a "mini-derecho" because its width did not meet the 100km width criteria. The Storm Prediction Center found that the 131 mph wind gust, should it be officially verified, would likely rank as the 15th strongest thunderstorm wind gust recorded in the United States.

The information in this event summary is preliminary and unofficial at this time and will be updated as new information is received.
