Above Average Temperatures for the West and Central Plains; Lake Effect Snow Continues

Well above average temperatures will prevail across the Plains and the West Coast this week, while a cold front will bring Arctic air to the South and East Coast Thursday and Friday. Lake effect snow is forecast downwind of the Great Lakes through Thursday along and behind the Arctic front, as well as mountain snow across the Southern Appalachians. Read More >

Recreation Forecast


The Recreational Forecast contains forecasts and reports on conditions for resort and recreational areas. The forecast will be issued one per day between 4am LST and 6am LST and will include a site specific forecast for the following weather elements:

  • Maximum Temperatures
  • Minimum Temperatures
  • Sky/Weather
  • Wind Speed and Direction
  • Lightning
  • 2 Day Extended Forecast

The Recreational Forecast will be issued for the following areas (see graphic below):

  • Northern Lake Oahe in north-central South Dakota
  • Southern Lake Oahe and Lake Sharpe in south-central South Dakota
  • Glacial Lake Region of northeastern South Dakota
  • Big Stone Lake and Lake Traverse in west-central Minnesota
  • Lake Kampeska in eastern South Dakota
