A multi-day thunderstorm and heavy rain event will impact the south-central U.S. this Memorial Day weekend. Severe thunderstorms may produce large hail, severe gusts, and a possible tornado or two across portions of the central and southern Plains through Monday. 1971 Lightning killed a boy in Clarence town park, injuring his sister and stunning five others sheltering under a tree. Heavy rains (2.9 inches) were reported in Bemus Point. A Tonawanda man was killed by lightning on a golf course in Niagara Falls, Ontario. 1994 An isolated thunderstorm spawned a weak tornado in the City of Geneva, Ontario county, near Packwood Road and Route 14. The initial touchdown occurred on the west side of Rte. 14 where trees were downed. As the storm crossed Rte 14 it destroyed empty grain elevators. Pieces of the buildings were strewn across fields to the northeast. Further east on Packwood Rd. about a dozen trees were downed. On Town Line Rd to the north of Packwood Rd. there was extensive damage to a stand of trees. Approximately 90% of mature trees in a two acre area were totally destroyed. 1999 Thunderstorms during the early morning hours dropped three to four inches of rain across parts of the western southern tier. The flash flooding that resulted closed a portion of Rte. 5 in Ripley, Chautauqua County.
