Western New York Weather History
APRIL 15
1991 Deep low pressure over Southern Ontario produced strong winds across portions of Western New York. Winds gusted to 68 mph in Niagara Falls; 63 mph at the Buffalo Airport; and 63 mph at the Monroe County Airport in Rochester. Sustained wind speeds of 40 mph were recorded at Dunkirk. In Orchard Park, a 70 ft. wooden structure to be used as the form for a concrete water tank had to be razed and rebuilt when the wind shifted the entire structure a half a foot. The strong winds also raised the level of the eastern end of Lake Erie producing some flooding and erosion along the lake shore. 2001 Melting snow from spring thaws caused the Black River in Lewis County to exceed flood stage for 81 hours. The crest however was only one foot above the 10' flood stage. Several roads were closed in Lowville and Grieg. One basement flooded in Carthage. 2002 15TH-17TH...Runoff from heavy rains and snowmelt caused the Black River to rise to bankful. In Lewis county, agricultural lands were flooded in Martinsburg. At Watertown, Jefferson county, the river reached and exceeded the 10' flood stage for 45 hours, cresting at 10.7'. 2003 High winds downed trees and power lines across the lower Genesee Valley during the afternoon hours. Up to 15000 customers were without power for several hours. The hardest hit areas were Greece , Parma and Pittsford.2006 A weak cold front crossed the area during the early overnight hours producing thunderstorms that dropped hail up to 1.75" in diameter. 2007 15th-16th...Low pressure developed over the southeast U.S. and moved northeast to the Delaware coast. The low rapidly intensified and circulated abundant Atlantic moisture back across New York. This combined with an unseasonably cold airmass across the region set the stage for a late season snowstorm across northern and central New York. Snowfall totals included: Montezuma 12”; Livonia 9”; Adams, Turin, West Monroe and Oswego 7”; and Bristol 15”.
