AUGUST 18

1900

At 2:55pm rain began falling at the Buffalo weather station, although it could be seen falling on the northwestern side of the station for least 15 minutes earlier. About 2:58pm, rain came down in torrents, and in 10 minutes 0.80 inches of rain fell, and in 20 minutes 1.00 inch fell. The streets were flooded, and in many parts of the city, the sewerage was unable to carry off the tremendous flow of water. A large number of cellars were flooded, and in the northwest side of Buffalo street cars had to suspend operations. Some hail fell at 3:15pm quite as large as marbles. The thunderstorm which had set in at 2:25pm was very sharp and vivid. At 3:15pm a terrific bolt flashing to earth seemed to tear it asunder. A change of 19 degrees in temperature occurred near 3pm.
