FEBRUARY 13
1950 A storm of snow, sleet and rain hit Buffalo. The storm began on the 13th with 7.7 inches of snow falling. Average wind velocity of 21.3 mph from the east created wintry condition throughout the area. The storm continued on the 14th with the snow changing to sleet then rain. 1.35 inches of rain fell on the 14th making the total precipitation (melted) for the two days 2.10 inches. Local flash flooding occurred on the 14th. 1985 Strong southwest winds caused an increase in the ice flow in the Niagara River on the 13th and 14th resulting in ice jams and flooding in parts of Wheatfield, Cayuga Island, and Grand Island. Some areas were evacuated and over 1000 sandbags were placed along the river banks. The water inundated streets, damaged homes, and destroyed numerous docks along the river front. 1996 A northwest flow following an arctic front set up snow squalls off Lake Ontario during the evening hours of the 12th. Redfield reported 9" and Granby 6". 1999 A general snowfall of three to six inches fell across the north country. Lake effect and orographic enhancement resulted in higher snowfall amounts over the Tug Hill Plateau. Snowfalls of seven to eleven inches were reported on the plateau. 2007 13th-14th...Deepening low pressure over the lower Mississippi Valley tracked into the lower Ohio Valley and slid to the Virginia Coast. Snowdeveloped ahead of the system and as it moved east, heavy snow fell across the entire area between the thirteenth and fourteenth. Ageneral snowfall of between one and two feet of snow blanketed the entire region, with slightly higher amounts across the higherelevations of the Finger Lakes Region. The usual rash of automobile accidents due to the wintry conditions were reported. “No Unnecessary Travel” bans were implemented in several of the counties due to the treacherous conditions. There were a couple of reports of roofs collapsing under the weight of the snow. Specific snowfall reports included: Ontario 23”; Wayland 22”; Hamlin 21”; Minetto 20”; Canandaigua 19”; Ransomville, Friendship and Yorkshire 18”; Grand Island 16”; LeRoy and Warsaw 15”; Gaines and Barnes Corners 14”; Forestville and Constantia 13”; and Watertown and Montezuma 10”.
