Western New York Weather History
FEBRUARY 20
1994 A few days of mild temperatures melted the snowpack and caused ice on area creeks and streams to break up. Ice jams formed and some flooding resulted. An ice jam on the Buffalo Creek caused water to rise at the rate of a foot an hour in Gardenville. The level of the creek rose to 8 feet (Flood Stage is 7'). Ice jams on the Walnut and Silver Creeks caused flooding in the village of Silver Creek. An ice jam on Cattaraugus Creek in the village of Gowanda prompted officials to close the Rte. 62 bridge. Limited evacuations took place at each location. 1996 Ice jams again developed, though not as serious as earlier this year, along the Buffalo Creek in West Seneca, Erie county. Although the creek rose above flood stage, the damage was confined to a few basements.
