Western New York Weather History
JUNE 22
1985 Strong southwest winds on Lake Erie--gusting to 41 mph--claimed one life, capsized several small vessels, and left two teenage girls stranded. A 16-foot fiberglass boat capsized just outside the breakwater of the Erie Basin Marina spilling all four occupants into the water and resulting in the drowning death of one. Two teenage girls were stranded adrift a rubber raft for 16 hours about four miles west of Silver Creek before being rescued by the Coast Guard. 1987 A rainfall total of 5.01 inches at the Buffalo Airport on the 22nd shattered the previous record for that date and set a new 24-hour rainfall record. The resulting flooding closed main arteries such as the N.Y.S Thruway, the Scajaquada Expressway and the Kensington Expressway. The gauge at Scajaquada creek recorded its highest reading ever - over 5 feet above flood stage. Cheektowaga, Depew and Lancaster suffered the brunt of the suburban flooding. In the city of Buffalo, flooding was reported throughout north Buffalo and the Black Rock section of the city. In north Buffalo, underground telephone cables became water logged and over 100 customers lost phone service. With innumerable streets closed, even normal short commutes home from work took hours. 1996 Severe thunderstorms produced damaging winds which downed trees and power lines across the western Finger Lakes. In Canandaigua, Ontario county, strong downburst winds blew a mobile home off its foundation, rolled it about 100 feet, and left it as a pile of rubble. A man and woman in the mobile home at the time were both injured. The local fire department had to free the woman from the collapsed trailer. Both were airlifted to area hospitals. The winds also picked up a nearby automobile. The driver of the car suffered back injuries as the car was tossed about by the wind. In South Bristol, a severe thunderstorm spawned a weak tornado around noon. The tornado first touched down in Ontario County on Hicks Road in the town of South Bristol. Several homes sustained minor structural damage including broken windows and torn roofs and siding. Several trees were uprooted or snapped. The tornado continued across Canandaigua Lake into Yates County (Central New York, WSO BGM area of responsibility). 2001 Thunderstorms produced damaging winds which downed power lines in Alexandria Bay, Jefferson county. The strong storms also produced downpours of one to two inches per hour across Lewis county. Some areas received over four inches of rain in less than three hours. In Lowville, street flooding occurred and roads were closed by flood waters.
