1977 13.2 inches of snow fell at the Buffalo airport with amounts of over a foot of snow reported throughout western new York. Wind gusts to 59 mph caused zero visibility white-outs, very low wind chill effects, and deep snow drifts. Combined with previous snowfalls, 27 inches of snow was on the ground at 7am of the 11th).
4.9 inches of snow fell in Buffalo and combined with high winds to produce wintry conditions throughout western new York. Peak gusts to 60 mph were recorded with the wind velocity averaging 25 mph for the day. Schools were closed throughout the region and isolated power failures occurred. Blizzard like conditions prevailed over most of the south towns at times throughout the day bringing traffic to a virtual standstill. More than a foot of snow was reported in the town of Evans and 8 inches in Orchard Park).
Heavy snow squalls meandered across Niagara and Erie counties Friday and Saturday dropping the fourth greatest 24-hour snow total on the Buffalo suburbs. By the time the snow squall drifted to the traditional snowbelt south of Buffalo, 21.4 inches of snow was recorded at the Buffalo Airport. The wind-whipped snow produced whiteout conditions and driving bans were imposed throughout the county. Snow fell at the rate of 2 to 3 inches an hour in the heaviest part of the squall. All flights into and out of the Buffalo Airport were canceled Friday night. The heavy snowfall, strong winds and freezing temperatures made travel treacherous. The Skyway was closed, but not before a 10-car pileup resulted in minor injuries.
