JULY 1

 

1953

A severe thundersquall struck parts of Grand Island, the Tonawandas, and north Buffalo during the evening. Destructive winds (fastest mile at the airport 59 mph from the west), heavy rain (2.27 inches in a 3-hour period from 6-9pm with 1.67 inches between 6 and 7pm and one inch in a 10-minute period), and hail caused damage estimated around two million dollars.

2001

Thunderstorms ahead of a cold front crossed the western Finger Lakes region and Eastern Lake Ontario counties during the morning hours. The storms produced damaging winds which downed trees and power lines across the area. In Clayton, Jefferson county, the winds tore a portion of a roof off a house. In Lewis county, power outages were reported from Lowville to Brantingham Lake.

2004

Thunderstorms that developed along a cold front crossing the Eastern Lake Ontario region produced large hail. Three-quarter inch hail fell in Constableville, Lewis county, and one-inch hail was reported in Altmar, Oswego county, and West Leyden , Lewis county.
