Western New York Weather History

MARCH 18

1989

An area of freezing rain was widespread across western New York downing numerous trees and power lines. Ice coated roads were blamed for countless automobile accidents. In downtown Buffalo, the ice coated the power lines of the metro rail cutting electricity to the inbound lines for about two hours. Greater Buffalo Airport was closed for about four hours so crews could clear runways. The Orleans County sheriff estimated that power failures affected three-fourths of that county at one point. Officials of the telephone company stated about 500 wires were downed and the utility lost many poles and cables in the Niagara Falls, Lockport, and Medina areas. In Wyoming County, a seven-car accident blamed on icy roads closed Route 63 for four hours.
