Western New York Weather History
MAY 14
1989 Lightning struck and killed two softball players in Randolph, Cattaraugus county, as they sought shelter from a thunderstorm under a tree. Four other players who had also run under the tree were treated for shock and minor injuries. 1995 Severe thunderstorm winds downed tree limbs and power lines over parts of extreme western New York. A roof was blown off a mobile home in Cassadaga Wind damage also occurred in Buffalo and Great Valley. Hail up to three-quarter-inch fell in the City of Buffalo. 2002 Deep low pressure crossed Ontario and brought heavy rains and high winds to the area. The heavy rains raised the levels of Chautauqua Lake by several inches and some docks were under water. The tight pressure gradient around the low produced strong southwest winds which funnelled up Lake Erie. Winds gusted close to 50 mph. In Lakewood, several docks and boats on Chautauqua Lake were damaged. The high winds downed trees and power lines in Jamestown and Lily Dale. |
