MAY 19

1957

Over two and a half inches of rain (2.61) was recorded at the Buffalo Airport in the two day period from the 19th-20th with 2.03 inches in 24 hours. Minor flooding occurred on some small streams and in poor drainage areas.

1986

A light rain began across the Niagara Frontier shortly before 8am continuing throughout the day. Just after 10pm the rain became very heavy...coming down in torrents. In the 6 hour period, from 8pm to 1am of the 20th, 2.63 inches of rain was recorded at the Buffalo Airport. A total fall of 3.41 inches for the day shattered the old record of 1.69 inches set in 1957. The heavy rains caused urban flooding as storm sewers were not able to handle the heavy flow of water. Only one local stream, Scajaquada Creek, rose above flood stage briefly before dropping back to within normal levels. In Cheektowaga, police reported the only main streets that were completely free of water problems were Walden and Union. Buffalo and Amherst police also reported numerous roads under water.

1997

Thunderstorms developed over Chautauqua county along a lake breeze in the late afternoon hours. The thunderstorms produced damaging winds which downed trees and power lines in Panama and Randolph. Heavy rains accompanied the thunderstorms and resulted in poor drainage and urban flooding.

1998

An isolated thunderstorm came across Lake Erie and dropped 3/4" hail at Wanakah, Erie county, as it came ashore.
