Western New York Weather History

SEPTEMBER 26

1977

Sept 24th-26th...Heavy rains on the 24th produced considerable flooding in many sections of the eight western New York counties at night and the following day. Heavy downpours again early on the 26th sent stream levels higher or up again. By noon on the 28th, a near record flood occurred on Ellicott Creek in Williamsville and Amherst. Over the weekend of the 24th-26th, several schools closed, many roads were closed, and numerous basements were flooded. In Amherst, 50 to 60 people were evacuated. The Corps of Engineers estimated Ellicott Creek damage at two hundred thousand dollars and Cayuga Creek damage a little over five hundred thousand dollars.

1998

Thunderstorms moved onshore from Lake Ontario and produced damaging winds across the north country. The thunderstorms, gusting to 61 mph, downed trees and power lines and resulted in some structural damage in Dexter.
