Overview

A winter storm caused blizzard conditions and heavy snowfall for parts of the Northland beginning late Tuesday February 17, 2026, through Thursday February 18, 2026. Snowfall totals were greatest across the Minnesota Arrowhead where snowfall amounts of 2-3 feet were observed, greatest in the northern parts of Cook County. Across the Iron Range, Twin Ports, and northern tier of northwest Wisconsin, snowfall amounts were in the 6 to 12 inch range, with some locally higher amounts in spots. And elsewhere amounts were much lower, with only 1 to 3 inches for the Brainerd Lakes and Lake Mille Lacs region east to Burnett, Washburn, Sawyer, and Price counties in northwest Wisconsin due to a rain to wintry mix falling for much of the storm, and lesser amounts northwest of the Iron Range due to the storm track. Blizzard conditions resulted in near impossible travel on Wednesday February 18, with MNDOT closing Highway 61 from Duluth to the Canadian border for a time early Wednesday morning and Cook County issuing a "No Travel Advisory." Snowfall was heavy and wet in consistency for much of the storm, and winds were some of the strongest observed in the past 30 years of records with peak gusts of 50 to 60 mph including a peak gust of 67 mph at the Duluth International Airport and 58 mph at the Bay of Grand Marais.

Meteorological Environment, Snow Amounts, and Ice on Lake Superior

Meteorological Environment, Winds, and Snowfall Amounts

A .gif image of the United States shows the progression of a low pressure system that approaches Minnesota during the February 18 blizzard. A four-panel map showing Advected Layer Precipitable Water for Sfc-850 (top left), 850-700 (top right), 700-500 (bottom left), and 500-300 hPa (bottom right). They illustrate mid-level moisture being advected from Baja California towards the upper Midwest. This map shows pressure change relative to a low pressure center over central Minnesota, with strong pressure falls to the northeast and pressure rises to the southwest.
Low pressure tracked across Minnesota and then slowly moved north over western Lake Superior before it dissipated and became enveloped within another passing low pressure system.
(Source: NOAA WPC)
This four-panel chart shows Advected Layer Precipitable Water (ALPW) during the storm at various pressure levels (Sfc-850, 850-700, 700-500, and 500-300 hPa). In the mid-levels, from 850-500 hPa, a steady moisture stream is seen extending from the Pacific Ocean and Baja California into the upper Midwest. This blizzard had a lot of moisture to work with given the storm's Pacific influence! This graphic shows the center of the low pressure system over central/southern Minnesota with strong pressure falls to the northeast and strong pressure rises to the southwest of the low. These strong pressure falls to the northeast are what created the very strong, damaging winds during this storm.
Duluth, MN Doppler Radar image current as of 2026/02/18 10:41 UTC, showing strong inbound east-northeasterly winds approaching the Duluth radar. A map of headlines issued by the National Weather Service in Duluth, MN for this storm. A blizzard warning was issued for the Twin Ports and North Shore, Winter Storm Warnings for most of northeast Minnesota and also Douglas/Bayfield counties, Winter Weather Advisories for the Brainerd Lakes and Ashland/Iron counties, and no headlines further south. A map of observed snowfall from the snowstorm. Total amounts in excess of a foot were found around the Twin Ports and up the North Shore, as well as parts of the Iron Range and Bayfield Peninsula. There were lesser amounts elsewhere.
This image shows a Duluth, MN doppler radar image (0.2 degree elevation) which was current as of 2/18/2026 at 10:41 UTC (4:41 AM CST). The blue colors show wind speeds in excess of 60 knots (~70 mph), which explains the >60 mph gusts that were observed at times at the Duluth International Airport during this storm. Here is an image of headlines issued by the National Weather Service in Duluth, MN at the peak of the storm. Orange colors are Blizzard Warnings, pink colors are Winter Storm Warnings, and purple colors are Winter Weather Advisories. This map shows the total snowfall received from this storm. The highest amounts were found along the North Shore of Lake Superior with totals well in excess of a foot.
