SUBJECT: NEW FORECAST SERVICES FOR THE NEMADJI RIVER NEAR SOUTH SUPERIOR.
EFFECTIVE September 15th, 2023, the National Weather Service in Duluth in cooperation with the North Central River Forecast Center are introducing a new river flood forecast point on the Nemadji River. The forecast point will be for an existing gauge on the Nemadji River and is part of NWS Duluth’s hydrologic services for the Western Lake Superior basin. Public stakeholders as well as County, State, Federal partners have expressed interest in expanded services in the basin.
NWSDLH Hydrologic Services will begin September 15th, 2023 for the point listed below. Flood forecast services may begin sooner if conditions warrant.

Forecast and warning information is available from the
NOAA/NWS Duluth web page at weather.gov/duluth as well as the
NOAA/NWS Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service (AHPS) web page
at water.weather.gov.
The NWS defines Flood Stage as the river level at which impacts to
life and/or property begin.
On the Nemadji River the minor flood stage is 24.0 ft, moderate flood stage is 26.0 ft. Major flood stage is 28.0 ft. Forecasts will be issued when projected stages reach an action stage of 22.0 ft. During record flooding of 2018 the gauge reached 29.3ft resulting in the closure of US Highway 2 in Superior Wisconsin.
