A heat wave over the Southwest will intensify late week, peaking and expanding into the Intermountain West and northern High Plains this weekend. Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected over portions of the Plains and Mississippi Valley tonight, which will shift to parts of the Upper Midwest and mid-Mississippi Valley Friday. Very hot weather is expected today, July 31, across the area. This afternoon and evening will feature scattered showers and thunderstorms.

There is a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for Severe Storms on Saturday, including large hail and damaging winds.

Cooling off a bit after Friday, but still above average into next week.
