Typical NWS COOP Thermometer and Rain Gauge

The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls is seeking a replacement cooperative observer for our Canton South Dakota location. The volunteer at this site would record temperature, precipitation, snowfall, and snow depth each day and electronically send the report daily to the NWS around 7 am. The equipment used for these measurements is provided by the NWS. Training for this job is provided by the NWS, ensuring readiness for collecting official United States climate data.

Becoming an NWS cooperative observer volunteer typically requires the following:

  1. Dedication to public service
  2. Attention to detail
  3. Ability to learn and perform daily duties
  4. Willingness to allow NWS to place measuring instruments on your property
  5. Willingness to allow at least one visit per year from a NWS representative

A couple more items that are necessary to join our network:

  1. Ownership of a personal computer and access to the internet
  2. An open area on your property for our temperature and precipitation equipment
