When thunder roars, go indoors! June 19th through 25th is National Lightning Safety Awareness Week. Lightning is one of the most underrated severe weather hazards and can occur anywhere there is a thunderstorm. Lightning strikes in the United States kill about 50 people and injure hundreds of others each year. This is why the National Weather Service wants to educate people about lightning safety and risks.

When you hear thunder or see lightning, you should immediately seek shelter in a substantial building or hard-topped vehicle. Nowhere outside is safe when thunderstorms are in the area. Stay inside at least 30 minutes after you hear the last clap of thunder. For more lightning facts and safety information, visit the Lightning Safety webpage. Learn more about the topics covered this week by reading the NWS Pueblo lightning science and safety statements.
