Thunderstorms are possible in the Sierra Nevada Wednesday afternoon, with slightly increased chances Friday afternoon which may extend into the surrounding foothills. Small hail and wind gusts near 45 miles per hour can be associated with stronger thunderstorms. In addition to dangerous cloud to ground lightning strikes, any thunderstorm can produce intense rainfall rates, leading to localized flooding.
For the Advisory, gusts up to 55 mph are forecast. For the High Wind Warnings, wind gusts up to 70 mph are forecast. Strong crosswinds pose a threat to high profile vehicles. Both the advisory and the warning are valid through 11 PM Friday evening.
Anyone on the Pacific Crest Trail the rest of this week should be aware of the probability of lightning.
A few strong thunderstorms are possible in the Sierra Nevada from 12 PM PDT Wednesday afternoon until 6 PM PDT Wednesday evening. Small hail and wind gusts near 45 miles per hour are a couple of hazards associated with strong thunderstorms. In addition to dangerous cloud to ground lightning strikes, any thunderstorm can produce intense rainfall rates, leading to localized flooding.
A weak storm system will impact the Sierra Nevada and adjacent foothills Thursday evening through Friday evening. The snow level will be around 7,000 feet. The majority of this precipitation will fall Friday afternoon.
