Winter Storm

Low pressure moving from the Tennessee Valley into the mid Atlantic states brought copious amounts of moisture from both the Gulf of America and the Atlantic into the Ohio Valley. Snow began falling around dawn on Sunday (3-14-99) and continued for much of the day leaving in general 4 to 8 inches across southeast Indiana, southern Ohio and northern Kentucky (including the Cincinnati proper and the southern metro) with a local maximum of 17 inches in West Union in Adams county. There was a very sharp cut off of snowfall as high pressure over the Great Lakes kept a dry northeasterly flow across Ohio. In fact communities just north of the heavy snow such as Hamilton, Wilmington, Washington Court House, Circleville and Lancaster only saw a few flurries or a light dusting.

The Watch was posted for the heavy snow area Friday afternoon, 36 hours before snow began and the Warning was posted Saturday afternoon, 12 hours before snow began.

Snowfall map from 3/14/99 snowstorm shows maximum of 17 inches in Adams County. The band of snow was about 60 miles wide, with little or no snow to the north and south of the band.
