Heavy Great Lakes Snow through Friday; Extreme Cold and Potential for Major Winter Storm Late Week into this Weekend

Multiple clipper systems will bring cold temperatures and enhance lake-effect snow downwind of the Great Lakes. An arctic blast will bring frigid temperatures accompanied with gusty winds that may lead to dangerous wind chills beginning in the Northern Plains Thursday before expanding to the South and East. Ice and Snow Winter Storm


A potent low pressure system tracked east from the Rocky Mountains into the Tennessee Valley before pivoting into the Tri-State area early on Jan 19. The upper level jet dynamics of the atmosphere coincident with a very strong thermal gradient allowed for a sustained winter storm that produced a diverse range of weather from rain, freezing rain, sleet, snow, and blowing snow across the Ohio Valley.
