National Weather Service Confirms F1 Tornado Touchdown in Eastern Jackson County

A damage survey team from the National Weather Service in Indianapolis has confirmed a tornado from last night’s storms in eastern Jackson County near Seymour .

The tornado touched down approximately one mile east-northeast of the town of Reddington in northeast Jackson County . The tornado then tracked south for approximately 8 miles, lifting near Interstate 65 mile marker 44.

“Tell tale signs of a tornado are evidence of rotation, or trees converging or pointing toward the path of destruction,” said Dave Tucek, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the Indianapolis NWS office. “There were several distinct areas of convergence where the heaviest damage occurred near Reddington,” added Tucek.

Jackson County Emergency Management Director at the time, Duane Davis, indicated at least seven homes were damaged by this tornado, with numerous other outbuildings or barns also damaged.

The tornado has been assigned a rating of F1 on the Fujita tornado scale, with maximum winds estimated near 110 MPH.

At its widest point, the combined straight line wind and tornado damage path was approximately six tenths of a mile wide. The tornado, at maximum size, was approxmately 300 yards wide.

A Fujita Scale rating of F1 indicates an estimated wind speed of between 73 and 112 MPH, and damage from a tornado of this intensity is classified as moderate.
