Tornado - Near Covington Vermillion and Warren Counties Date November 17, 2013 Time (Local) 2:22 PM EST EF Rating EF-2 Est. Peak Winds 130 MPH Path Length 6 Miles Max Width 150 Yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: The tornado developed along the Illinois-Indiana state line just West of Rileysburg. A church was pushed off its foundation with exterior walls collapsed in Rileysburg. A train car was also pushed off railroad tracks in Rileysburg. A couple mobile homes were completely destroyed to the west of Covington. Track Map

Tornado - Mellott Fountain and Tippecanoe Counties Date November 17, 2013 Time (Local) 2:32 PM EST EF Rating EF-2 Est. Peak Winds 130 MPH Path Length 12.8 Miles Max Width 75 Yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: The most extensive damage with this tornado occurred in the town of Mellott. One mobile home was completely destroyed, with four additional mobile homes either rolled off their foundation or damaged. An old retail shop with a cinder block base had exterior walls collapsed. A residence a little over two miles east of Newtown had a garage and barn destroyed, and the entire roof removed from the home. Track Map

Tornado - Near New Richmond Montgomery County Date November 17, 2013 Time (Local) 2:47 PM EST EF Rating EF-1 Est. Peak Winds 110 MPH Path Length 1.8 Miles Max Width 40 Yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: The tornado hit two metal buildings near the Weaver Popcorn plant. Metal debris, insulation, and 2x4s from the buildings were scattered to the northeast along a path just under 2 miles long. Track Map

Peak Winds 120 and 75 MPH Path Length 3.2 and 0.5 Miles Max Width 75 and 50 Yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: The Southwestern Elementary and Middle Schools to the northwest of Romney both sustained significant damage to their structures. The gymnasium at the middle school had a wall blown out, with roof damage to both schools. Track Map

Tornado - Lafayette to Young America Tippecanoe, Clinton, and Carroll Counties Date November 17, 2013 Time (Local) 2:54 PM EST EF Rating EF-3 Est. Peak Winds 140 MPH Path Length 29.2 Miles Max Width 100 Yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: The Subaru and Voest Alpine plants southeast of Lafayette both sustained significant damage consistent with a low-end EF-3 rating. Property and tree damage then continued northeast to the north of Dayton, northwest of Rossvile and across southern and eastern Carroll County. A hog farm sustained damage to several outbuildings in extreme southwest Carroll County. Additional damage was found in Cutler. much of the damage across Carroll County ranged between EF-0 and EF-1. This tornado crossed into Cass County near State Route 18, continuing for nearly an additional 10 miles. The total path length including Cass County is 39 miles. Tornado - Near Stockwell Tippecanoe County Date November 17, 2013 Time (Local) 2:56 PM EST EF Rating EF-1 Est. Peak Winds 97 MPH Path Length 2.9 Miles Max Width 35 Yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: The tornado caused damage to an old barn, scattering some debris. The tornado continued along a northeast path where it varied in strength at times. It eventually caused considerable damage to a second barn as well as siding and window damage to a house. Debris was scattered northeasterly across a field for over a mile. Track Map

Tornado - Near Decker Knox County Date November 17, 2013 Time (Local) 2:56 PM EST EF Rating EF-2 Est. Peak Winds 130 MPH Path Length 8.8 Miles Max Width 100 Yards Injuries/Deaths 1/0 Summary: The most extensive damage was found north of Decker along Old Decker Road just to the east of US Route 41. The seconds story of a home was removed with the exterior walls collapsed. This tornado continued until just west of Monroe City. Track Map

Tornadoes - Kokomo Clinton into Howard Counties Date November 17, 2013 Time (Local) 3:13 PM and 3:29 PM EST EF Rating EF-2 for both Est. Peak Winds 130 and 120 MPH Path Length 25.8 and 0.5 Miles Max Width 150 and 75 Yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 and 5/0 Summary: The longer tornado caused damage to a hog farm and severe properties northeast of Michigantown, with additional damage found tot he east of Rossville. The tornado was at its strongest as it crossed through the southeast side of Kokomo, causing extensive property damage. A BMO bank was destroyed with significant damage to several fast food restaurants along south Washington street. The small tornado damaged several well build homes in the vicinity of East Ricketts Street, producing additional damage in Kokomo. The tornado cross east Hofer Street, damaging a UAW building before lifting. Track Map

Tornado - Washington Daviess County Date November 17, 2013 Time (Local) 3:20 PM EST EF Rating EF-2 Est. Peak Winds 120 MPH Path Length 2.8 Miles Max Width 125 Yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: The tornado moved into the southwest side of Washington, with property damage in the city of Washington. An entire home was knocked off its foundation near the intersection of Fourth and Sycamore streets. Track Map

Tornadoes - Near Lebanon Boone County Date November 17, 2023 Time (Local) 3:36 and 3:46 PM EST EF Rating EF-2 and EF-1 Est. Peak Winds 115 MPH and 100 MPH Path Length 3.7 Miles each  Max Width 75 Yards and 33 Yards Injuries/Deaths 2/0 and 0/0 Summary: First Tornado: The tornado tracked from southwest of Lebanon, through an industrial area just west of Interstate 65 near the State Route 39 Interchange (Exit 139) and heavily damaged a Starbucks on the east side of the interchange. Several homes sustained damage in the neighborhood directly east-northeast of the Starbucks. Second Tornado: The tornado was on the ground northeast of Lebanon, from near County Road 500 East and 300 South, ending just west of US Route 421 just north of the intersection with County Road 400 North.   Track Map

Tornado - Near Bedford Lawrence County Date November 17, 2013 Time (Local) 3:57 PM EST EF Rating EF-1 Est. Peak Winds 90 MPH Path Length 1.3 Miles Max Width 50 Yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: A tornado tracked across the north side of Bedford. Most of the funnel was aloft, but intermittently touched down several times. This split and uprooted trees, knocked down power lines, and caused some roof and structural damage to several homes. The Worse of the damage was along M, N, and O streets on the north side of Bedford. Several witnesses observed one or two small narrow funnels dropping up and down from a wide wall cloud. Many witnesses also described a strong pressure change, a green sky, and a roar as the tornado went through. We would like to thank NWS Louisville for conducting this damage survey. Track Map

Tornado - Atlanta Hamilton and Tipton Counties Date November 17, 2013 Time (Local) 4:05 PM EST EF Rating EF-1 Est. Peak Winds 100 MPH Path Length 1.9 Miles Max Width 125 Yards Injuries/Deaths 0/0 Summary: The tornado tracked through the town of Atlanta, producing damage to structures in town. The tornado path ended to the east of Cicero Creek and just north of the Hamilton-Tipton County line. Track Map

Environment

A potent weather system moved into the Ohio Valley during the afternoon of November 17, 2013. The setup became ideal for severe weather, including multiple tornadoes.

Figure 1: The above is a map of jet stream wind speeds (color background) and streamlines showing direction of flow. Warmer colors equal higher speeds. A strong jet stream was approaching central Indiana during the afternoon of November 17.	Figure 2: An upper trough was approaching the area as well. The above is 500 mb heights valid at 3:00 PM.	Figure 3: Not far off the surface, strong winds were flowing north from the Gulf of Mexico. Above is a map of wind speeds at 500 meters above ground (approximately 1600ft). The colors indicate wind speed, with warmer colors indicating faster speeds. Speeds over Indiana at 3:00 PM were over 50 mph. The arrows indicate the wind flow.

Figure 4: At the surface, a cold front was approaching from the west. Plenty of moisture was available, especially for mid-November, with surface dewpoints in the upper 50s and lower 60s. The above plot shows for 3:00 PM: sea level pressure contours, surface observations. The colors represent dewpoint, with warmer colors indicating higher dewpoints. Above is a map of instability (Mixed Layer CAPE) valid at 3:00 PM. Areas outlined in red are unstable.	Figure 6: The turning of the winds with height set up by the approaching upper trough and winds ahead of the surface cold front set the stage for the potential for tornadoes. The above plot is for Effective Storm Relative Helicity valid at 3:00 PM. The numbers across central Indiana were extremely high for November.
