Overview

An outbreak of wildfires severely impacted northwestern North Dakota on Saturday, October 5, 2024. A powerful cold front moved across the state early in the day, producing northwesterly winds gusting as high as 78 mph. The combination of very high winds with a very dry air mass and dry fuels contributed to the rapid spread of wildfires across Williams and McKenzie counties.

As of October 10th, 2024, sources have reported to the National Weather Service:

A complex of two fires, referred to as the Ray and Tioga Fires, burned across Williams County. Both of these fires crossed US Highway 2, and one of them nearly entered the town of Ray.

There were three significant wildfires in McKenzie County. An early morning fire threatened the town of Arnegard after the initial wind shift with the cold front, but was controlled before even higher sustained winds arrived in the afternoon. The Elkhorn Fire began 13 miles southeast of Watford City. The Bear Den Fire in far eastern McKenzie County threatened the community of Mandaree.

In total approximately 111,000 acres burned including nearly 89,000 in Williams County, almost 12,000 on the Bear Den Fire (McKenzie County), and just over 10,000 acres in the Elkhorn Fire (McKenzie County).

There were at least two fatalities and six injuries associated with these fires. While the fires did not enter any towns, rural residences and other buildings/structures were burned. Damage to pastures, farmland, and fencing was extensive. There may have been a significant loss of livestock.
