National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

NWS Milwaukee/Sullivan Student Volunteer

Summer 2026 Open until March 1, 2026

The Milwaukee/Sullivan National Weather Service office is pleased to offer a summer volunteer opportunity for meteorology/atmospheric sciences college students to gain real-world experience in a forecast office for summer of 2026.

Student volunteers typically work at least one day per week for 4 to 8 hours. This volunteer program allows students to become familiar with National Weather Service operations and impact-based decision support services. Selected students will work closely with our operations team, Science & Operations Officer, Warning Coordination Meteorologist, and Hydrologist. During active severe weather days, an effort is made to include the student as much as possible in our operations. On other days, students will participate in operational job shadowing, forecast module training, and other relevant job related training.

This opportunity is open to all graduate and undergraduate students studying meteorology, atmospheric sciences, or closely related fields. Students do not need to be from southern Wisconsin to volunteer at our office.  Any student who will be in the area and is able to commute to Sullivan, WI about once a week is welcome to apply.

Due to the number of interested students, an application process is used to select students for the program. To apply for the 2026 student volunteer positions, provide the following:

  1. Resume - 1-2 pages
  2. Cover Letter

Please email your documents by end of the day Sunday, March 1, 2026 to Kevin Wagner - Lead Meteorologist at kevin.wagner@noaa.gov
