ITIC Training > Tsunami Warning Center Minimum Staff Competencies
In 2023, the PTWS approved National Tsunami Warning Centre (NTWC) Minimum Staff Competency Levels (ICG/PTWS-XXX) and accepted the proposal of the ITIC to pilot a training programme based on the competencies. In 2024, the ITIC received capacity development funding from the US Dept of State to create and conduct training to meet the Minimum Competency Levels of NTWC Operational Staff. ITIC is developing the training in coordination with the UNESCO-IOC, and in consultation with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) and advanced TWC country partners and Tsunami Service Providers. The TWC-MSC training programme will be hosted by the IOC Ocean Teacher Global Academy (OTGA) and will consist of a series of modules requiring a passing grade to progress to the next module. Early modules are self-paced online, progressing to hybrid modules, and the last component will be a 3-4 week in-person training at the ITIC and PTWC. TWC-MSC topics cover science knowledge (tsunamis, earthquakes and other tsunami sources, tsunami forecasting), and core operations (national event / routine SOPs, TSP SOPs).
