Heavy Great Lakes Snow through Friday; Extreme Cold and Potential for Major Winter Storm Late Week into this Weekend

Multiple clipper systems will bring cold temperatures and enhance lake-effect snow downwind of the Great Lakes. An arctic blast will bring frigid temperatures accompanied with gusty winds that may lead to dangerous wind chills beginning in the Northern Plains Thursday before expanding to the South and East. An unseasonably cold air mass has settled over the region. After this morning's temps below freezing in many spots, there is another chance for a hard freeze tonight. 

 

Forecast Low Temperatures

  • Tonight lows 26 to 32 degrees along and east of I-65 - Freeze Warning in effect along and east of a line from Paoli, Indiana to Glasgow, Kentucky.
  • Coldest readings expected across southeast Indiana and the Bluegrass area of central Kentucky.

Impacts

  • Given the early start to the growing season, those with agricultural interests should closely monitor the forecasts and prepare for the possibility of sub freezing temperatures.
  • Even urban, metro regions such as Louisville could see lows below 32 degrees.
