A National Weather Service Survey found evidence of an
EF-0 tornado that occurred on Friday, July 10 2015 at Ft. Knox.
Nearly all of the damage was tree and power line related. The
tornado touched down near the PX and commissary complex of Ft. Knox.
Several large Hackberry and Oak trees were uprooted and/or snapped
between the PX and Scott Middle School. There was also some shingle
damage to some of the buildings near the high school track and the
middle school. There was significant tree damage from the middle
school NNE across a remote area of the northeast part of the post.
The Louisville NWS is working with one of our best partners, Mark
Adams, Station Manager of the Fort Knox Base Weather Station, to see
if a helicopter crew can look at the damage. We are hoping an
aviation crew can get a more precise damage path plot over the
complex and rugged forested area of Ft. Knox, which may increase the
final tornado path length.
The NWS would like to thank Kevin McCormick, forecaster at the Ft.
Knox base weather station, for his help and navigation around the
post.
