Prolonged, Intense Heat Wave; Excessive Rainfall in the Southern Rockies; Severe Weather in the Central US

Extremely dangerous heat will persist from the Midwest to the East Coast into late this week. Monsoonal moisture may produce excessive rain and considerable flash flooding and debris flows, especially near recent burn scar areas in New Mexico and west Texas. A strong low pressure system will pass through the region tonight through Thursday, bringing widespread rain and gusty winds. Some periods of heavy rain are expected. As the system passes to our northeast Wednesday night and colder air arrives, a change over to snow is expected. Some minor accumulations are possible across southern Indiana and the Bluegrass of Kentucky Wednesday night and Thursday.

  • Rain moves in this evening, becoming widespread overnight.
  • Heavy rain, localized flooding possible
  • Embedded thunderstorms possible

Wednesday

  • Periods of rain.
  • Thunderstorms possible in the afternoon. Some strong storms possible along/east of I-75.

Wednesday Night

  • Windy, rain changing over to snow
  • Light accumulations possible on elevated and grassy surfaces

Thursday

  • Much cooler, windy with snow showers
  • Some minor accumulations north of KY parkways possible
