Prolonged, Intense Heat Wave; Excessive Rainfall in the Southern Rockies; Severe Weather in the Central US

Extremely dangerous heat will persist from the Midwest to the East Coast into late this week. Monsoonal moisture may produce excessive rain and considerable flash flooding and debris flows, especially near recent burn scar areas in New Mexico and west Texas. A quick-moving system brought snow showers and squalls to the Ohio Valley on January 12, 2016. This satellite image shows many interesting features, including pre-existing snow pack over Illinois and northern Indiana, and new areas of snow from southern Indiana through northern Kentucky.

Winds gusted to 50 mph with some of the squalls in north central Kentucky, with visibility briefly reduced to less than a quarter mile. One to two inches of total snowfall was reported across the area.
