Severe Thunderstorms in the Northeast and Northern Plains; Critical Fire Weather in the West

Scattered severe thunderstorms capable of damaging wind gusts and hail are forecast across the Northeast U.S. and North Dakota today. Heavy to excessive rainfall is possible over eastern New Mexico into western Texas and over the western Florida peninsula today. Mr. Jeffrey (Jeff) S. Graschel, Service Coordination Hydrologist at the Lower Mississippi River Forecast Center (LMRFC), is the recipient of the 2017 Gregg B. Rishel Award. This prestigious award is named in honor of Gregg B. Rishel, a respected hydrologist. Mr. Rishel made several important contributions to the hydrologic mission of the National Weather Service (NWS), and was well known for his strong work ethic, passion for hydrology, and commitment to improving hydrologic services. This award recognizes an individual for hydrologic science and/or service contributions that support the fulfillment of the hydrologic services mission of the NWS.

Jeff Graschel was selected for this award for two reasons: First, he delivered timely and accurate life- and resource-saving hydrologic forecasts and services. Second, he established and improved cooperative efforts with local, state, and federal agencies. Jeff’s outstanding performance and commitment to the mission of saving lives and property exemplifies the kind of professional contributions the award was intended to recognize.
