Thunderstorms and Heavy Rains Across Portions of the Central and Eastern US; Heat Expands to Portions of the East

Widespread showers and thunderstorms, some severe, may produce heavy downpours and flash flooding across much of the eastern and central U.S. Dangerous heat will continue in the Pacific Northwest and expand across portions of the East. The annual exceedance probability (AEP) provides a way of comparing rainfall to the climate of a particular area. For example, a certain amount of rain may be less rare in Louisiana than Missouri. Estimating the annual chance of observed or forecast rainfall amounts may provide a way of determining the significance of that rainfall for a particular location.
