Overview

A line of showers and thunderstorms rolled across southern Wisconsin during the late afternoon and evening hours Thursday, March 23, 2017. This was somewhat unusual as air temperatures were only in the upper 30s to mid 40s when the storms rolled through. Not only was it cold at ground level, there was plenty of cold air aloft and this helped to generate copious amounts of mostly small hail in a few of the stronger storms. Some storms did produce large hail, as much as 1 to 1 1/2" in diameter in a few locations.

The hail was so prolific, it left many roads and sidewalks ice covered and slippery through the overnight hours.  Plows were even called out in some instances.
