Overview

A cluster of severe thunderstorms moved across northeast New Jersey and southern portions of the NYC metro during the evening on July 3, 2026.
A weak upper level disturbance interacted with a surface trough over the region, high instability, modest shear, and high downdraft CAPE (estimate of potential strength of rain-cooled downdrafts, larger the value the greater potential for strong downdrafts).
Numerous trees were downed across many towns in Bergen, Essex, Union, Hudson, Passaic Counties.
A broadcast booth and spectator setup for July 4/Sail 250 events was destroyed on Governors Island.
A destructive tagged severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Union County and Essex County at 7:47pm.
A 71 mph wind gust was observed at the Newark Liberty International Airport at 7:53pm.
A 68 mph wind gust and a 67 mph wind gust were observed at mesonet stations 2 SE of Elizabeth and 1 ENE of Bayonne at 8:01pm respectively.
A 59 mph wind gust was observed at the Brooklyn College NY Mesonet Station at 8:10pm.
A 58 mph wind gust was observed at the Linden, NJ Airport and at the College of Staten Island NY Mesonet Station at 7:55pm.
