Overview

A cold front brought a line of showers and thunderstorms across the Lower Hudson Valley, northeast New Jersey, Southern CT, and Long Island during the evening of July 4th.
Numerous trees and wires were downed with the greatest impacts across Bergen, north shore of Nassau, central and eastern Suffolk County, and portions of interior Southern Connecticut in Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London Counties.
A destructive tagged severe thunderstorm warning was issued for portions of Suffolk County at 8:57pm.
A 87 mph wind gust was observed by a trained spotter in Baiting Hollow, NY at 8:32pm.
A 75 mph wind gust was observed at the Bayville, NY mesonet at 8:35pm.
A 66 mph wind gust was observed 2 SE of Watermill, NY at the Mecox Bay mesonet at 9:39pm.
A 65 mph wind gust was observed at the US Coast Guard Academy mesonet 2 N New London, CT at 9:17pm.
A 64 mph wind gust was observed at the Westhampton Beach Airport at 9:25pm.
A 58 mph wind gust was observed at the Shirley Airport at 9:19 pm.
Additional showers and thunderstorms approached the region overnight midnight, but weakened as they overhead.
