Watching the Potential East Coast Storm Late This Week

Bitterly cold temperatures will persist across portions of the Plains, Great Lakes region and Northeast this week as a series of cold fronts moves across those regions. A weak system will track across the south this week with some wet weather. These systems may merge just off the east coast late this week. AN OFFICIAL NEW YORK STATE 24 HOUR PRECIPITATION RECORD WAS SET
AT ISLIP MACARTHUR AIRPORT ON AUGUST 12-13 2014. THE TOTAL 24 HOUR
PRECIPITATION FOR THIS DATE WAS 13.57 INCHES. THIS BREAKS THE
PREVIOUS NEW YORK STATE RECORD OF 11.6 INCHES AT TANNERSVILLE NY
ON AUGUST 27-28 2011 DURING HURRICANE/TROPCIAL STORM IRENE.

AFTER ADDITIONAL INVESTIGATION...AN UNOFFICIAL OBSERVATION OF 14.1+
INCHES WAS REPORTED IN JULY 17-18 1942 AT WELLSVILLE NY. THIS
OBSERVATION WAS NOT MADE BY AN OFFICIAL OBSERVER USING PURPOSE-
BUILT EQUIPMENT; IT WAS A BUCKET-VALUE CONVERTED TO INCHES. LITTLE
OFFICIAL RECORD EXISTS BEYOND AN APPENDIX OF A U.S. WEATHER BUREAU
REPORT ON THE HEAVY RAIN EVENT...WHICH NOTED THE CATCH PAN MAY
HAVE BEEN INUNDATED BY A CREEK FLOOD. THIS EVENT MAY WARRANT
FUTURE CONSIDERATION...BUT IS NOT CURRENTLY CONSIDERED A
LEGITIMATE CANDIDATE FOR THE RECORD.
