Overview

Heavy rain fell across southeast Colorado on May 10th and 11th.  The hardest hit areas were in the areas of Beulah and near La Junta.  More moderate rain also created unusually intense runoff in the upper Purgatoire River and resulted in large releases from Trinidad Dam.

Four to six inches of rain fell in the North Creek drainage causing flash flooding above and into the town of Beulah. Roads were washed out and some residents stranded. As the flood waters moved downstream they created minor to moderate flooding on the Arkansas River at Avondale and down to La Junta.  Some roads were closed in the area of La Junta.

The heavy rain was not limited to these areas and flash flooding of small proportions occurred throughout the heavily affected areas.
