Here are some basic flash flood safety rules...

- Go to higher ground during flash flooding.  Walk UP, do not drive OUT of a flash flood area.

- Do NOT drive or walk into water of unknown depth.  The roadway or pathway may be washed out, and the water could be much deeper than you think.  Fast-flowing water 1 1/2 feet deep can flip a vehicle, or carry it downstream, and fast-flowing water less than a foot deep can knock a person off his or her feet.

- Be aware that sometimes flash flooding can occur when heavy rain falls far away from your location, and then there is a rapid rise of water where you are later.

- Be aware that at night it is difficult to see flash flood situations developing.

If a flash flood WARNING is in effect, it means flash flooding is occurring or imminent.  If you encounter flash flooding, remember...
