NWS Pueblo Student Volunteer Program 2025

Experience what a career in the National Weather Service is like! Apply to our summer student volunteer program and gain real-world operational meteorology experience at the forecast office in Pueblo, Colorado.

 

The Program: Student volunteers will develop an understanding of the culture, responsibilities, and services of the WFO. This includes:

  • Operational training, assisting the WFO in providing real-team operational services to its customers.
  • Forecasting experience. Gain practical knowledge with NWS systems, software, and practices.
  • Mentorship and career counseling, to educate and prepare students for future careers in meteorology.
  • And more!

Schedule: Schedules will vary based on the needs of the student. Typically, volunteers will come to the WFO up to 12-20 hours per week, spread over 2-3 days. Hours can be flexible, within reason. The total length of the volunteer program will be ~120 hours. 

The start/end dates for the program are also flexible, and the program will run from late May to early August. 

 

Eligibility: To qualify, applicants must be an undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing. Applicant should be pursuing a degree in meteorology or atmospheric science (or a closely related field). All volunteers are subject to a mandatory security background check. This position is unpaid. 

 

Application: The selection process will be competitive. Applicant must submit 1) a resume, 2) a single-page cover letter expressing interests and motivation, 3) unofficial transcripts, and 4) at least one letter of reference (academic). Interviews may be conducted following the closing date.
