Historic floods
One of the historic floods to affect the Appalachian region of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia was the flood of April 2-5 in 1977, 40 years ago. This flood was the catalyst which prompted the National Weather Service to create an early warning Mesonet of rain gauges in the Appalachia region of the United States called IFLOWS ( Integrated Flood Observing and Warning System).
