Lala Approaching Hawaii; Flash Flooding Risks; Excessive Heat

Lala, may become a hurricane, is expected to impact Hawaii this weekend. Heavy rainfall, strong winds, dangerous surf and localized flooding are expected. Heavy rainfall and flash flooding concerns from the mid-Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley into the central Appalachians continues, with the threat shifting toward the mid-Atlantic later this weekend. In the Rio Grande Valley, DJF precipitation is increased during El Niño events with the southern station, Socorro, averaging 135% of the long term average while Albuquerque averages 132% of normal. The impact is greater during strong El Niño events, with above average precipitation occurring during almost all six events at Socorro (166% of normal), and only 136% of the average precipitation at the Albuquerque Sunport.
