Overview

An unprecedented heavy rain event/rain storm impacted eastern NY and western New England on July 28-30, 2026. Scattered to numerous instances of flash flooding occurred with the Greater Capital Region, eastern Catskills and northern portions of the mid-Hudson Valley being the hardest hit. A closed/cutoff low was positioned over the region. The mid and upper low captured a double-barrel low pressure system with one low centered over eastern/southern NY and a secondary coastal low southeast of Long Island. Meso-vortices migrated around the mid and upper level low over the region. A tremendous fetch of deep moisture occurred from the Atlantic and Gulf. Precipitable water anomalies were 2-3 standard deviations above normal in the 1.40-1.80 inch range. Freezing levels were high in the 11-13 kft above ground level range.  Very efficient rainfall processes occurred with more of a cool season style synoptic system with an impressive stratiform rainband with initially embedded convection in the low/mid level deformation zone of the system. Intense rainfall rates of 1-3 inches per hour and thunderstorms/heavy showers repeatedly moved over the same areas. The Greater Capital Region, northern reaches of the mid-Hudson Valley and eastern Catskills received the most rainfall with widespread amounts of 6 to 12 inches.

Impressive, record-breaking rainfall amounts occurred in a 2-day stretch, though most of the rainfall occurred in a 24-30 hour period. 5.45 inches of rain occurred on July 29th at Albany, shattering the old record of 1.90 inches set in 1974. This was also the wettest July day on record for Albany. This calendar day total is the 2nd wettest day on record overall, only behind the 5.60 inches that occurred on Sept 16, 1999 with TS Floyd moisture. The 2-day total at Albany was 7.00 inches.

The NYS Mesonet network recorded 11.79 inches of rainfall at Schodack and 11.47 inches at Kinderhook.  This was a 1 in a 1000 year precipitation/heavy rain event for those areas. Poughkeepsie also had 2.68" of rainfall on July 29th which broke the old record of 1.86" in 1971.

Despite this much rainfall, abnormally dry conditions ahead of this event limited impacts from river flooding. Only five river points reached flood stage (4 Minor and one Moderate) during this event with one river falling just short of minor flood stage (Mt Marion on the Esopus).
