Low Pressure System Brings Two Days of Severe Weather After Memorial Day

May 26-27, 2015

A warm front, extending from a low pressure system over the plains, moved through the lower Great Lakes on May 24-25 allowing warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico to reach northern Ohio and northwestern Pennsylvania.

On May 26, northern Ohio became moderately unstable with temperatures rising to the mid to upper 80s by early afternoon. A shortwave trough ahead of the low pressure system triggered showers and thunderstorms that become severe as they moved into the western areas of our area of responsibility. Storms that reached severe limits produced damaging winds between 60-70 mph.

On May 27, the low pressure system moved through the Great Lakes region and a weakening cold front extending south of the low moved across northern Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania. The air mass ahead of the cold front was still rather unstable as temperatures reached the 80s again and the moisture recovered from storms on May 26.
