Overview

A frontal boundary settled into the area early on July 5th. Weak low pressure developed along this front and moved into Northwest Ohio on the morning of July 5th. This low pressure then remained nearly stationary through the 5th and into the 6th before weakening and exiting to the southeast later on the 6th into the 7th. The front and low pressure combined with a weak trough aloft to encourage periods of showers and thunderstorms from the 5th through the 6th. A warm and very humid air mass combined with weak steering flow to support slow-moving thunderstorms with torrential rainfall rates. There were several waves of thunderstorms with heavy rain. An initial batch of thunderstorms tracked across northern Ohio during the morning and early afternoon of the 5th, bringing flash flooding and severe weather to the Youngstown area. An EF-1 tornado and macroburst caused extensive wind damage across Mahoning County, leading to widespread power outages and a state of emergency declaration. Additional thunderstorms the evening of the 5th brought flash flooding across North Central Ohio. Lake-enhanced showers and thunderstorms developed over Lake Erie overnight July 5th into the 6th, with east-northeast winds pushing this activity towards the western lakeshore. The most notable impacts came on Kelleys Island, where 10 to 15 inches of rain fell over a several-hour period and led to significant flash flooding during the early morning hours of the 6th. Additional significant flooding occurred later in the morning and into the afternoon on the mainland from just south of Toledo to the Port Clinton area, with more storms developing during the afternoon and causing flash flooding east of Cleveland in parts of Lake and Geauga Counties. |

Flooding
Atmospheric conditions were extremely conducive to thunderstorms that produced torrential rainfall rates from July 5th into July 6th. Locations that were impacted by slow-moving or repeated thunderstorms quickly saw rain amounts add up to several inches. Localized but in some cases significant flash flooding resulted across portions of the area impacted by the heavier rain amounts.
